CAPTION TEXT ON PRINT:

Elmore Orange Crate Derby, 1953
It was homecoming time in Elmore in August, which meant it was time for the Orange Crate Derby.

As one of the events for the community’s younger set, the derby had become a tradition. All the racers in the derby were powered by gravity on an inclined course on an Elmore side street.

In this heat, Mike Hensel of Genoa crossed the finish line first. Mike went on to finish fourth in the final derby standings.

Closely trailing Mike were Jan Stucky of Oak Harbor and Linden Damschroder of Elmore.
